We purchased this from a fellow collector here in Chicago. When we first discovered it, we immediately knew we wanted to preserve the patina and give it thick overstuffed mohair cushions.

Rarely do you come across a wooden piece with the perfect amount of decay while remaining perfectly structurally sound. We love furniture that wears its history proudly, and this is one of those pieces where restoring it too far would erase exactly what makes it special.

We're not entirely sure what its original purpose was, and that's part of what drew us to it. Was it a turn of the century luxury chaise, or perhaps a hospital recovery lounger built to make long periods of rest a little more comfortable? It's unusual proportions and construction leave just enough mystery that we may never know for certain.

Our plan is to remove only the loose paint, gently sand what remains, and clear coat the entire frame, preserving the mix of exposed aged wood, flaking yellow paint, and more than a century of character.

From there, we'll build two thick, overstuffed cushions in mohair, creating a deliberate contrast between the beautifully weathered frame and crisp new upholstery. Of course, it doesn't have to be mohair. The upholstery can be customized in whatever fabric, color, or texture you'd like.
