Designed by Paul McCobb for Winchendon Furniture as part of his celebrated Planner Group, this double-pedestal desk takes the same restrained approach that made the collection a defining piece of postwar American design. A broad, thin-edged work surface floats above two sets of drawers, while McCobb's iconic tapered legs keep what could have been a visually heavy desk surprisingly light.
The asymmetrical drawer arrangement gives it some personality. Three drawers on one side and two deeper drawers on the other, finished with small brass pulls that provide just enough contrast against the maple. The back is fully finished as well, allowing the desk to sit out in a room rather than being relegated to a wall.
The existing finish has seen better days, but underneath it is exactly what we want to preserve. We'll completely strip the old finish, carefully prepare the wood, and refinish the desk in its original natural maple tone with a fresh clear finish rather than changing what McCobb intended. The brass hardware will be removed, cleaned, and polished before everything is reassembled.
The result will retain the warm, straightforward character of the original Planner Group design, just without seventy years of wear getting in the way.
